When adding an orangery to your home one of the most important considerations to make is how large your new orangery is going to be. Visualising the size of an orangery can be difficult and a great tip is to measure the size of some of the existing rooms in your house as this will help to give you an idea of how much space you would have and the amount of furniture you would be able to fit in.
Once you have an idea of a size then the best thing to do is to go out into the garden and mark where the orangery will go. It can be useful to put markers in where the doors will be and then use patio furniture to mark out a rough guide of where your furniture will go. This will help you to visualise your orangery and whether you feel the size you have chosen will be big enough. Although this may seem like a lot of effort at the time it is far easier to change the dimensions of your orangery at this stage than it will be nce the orangery is built.
At this stage once you have agreed how big you want your new orangery to be you should get in touch with the planning office at your local council. They will be able to inform you whether you will be required to apply for planning permission or not. If you home is listed or you live in a conservation area then you are likely to need to apply for planning permission. And in some new developments the developer may have put a covenant into your contract requiring you to apply for permission before you extend your property. However the vast majority of orangeries do not require planning permission but it is always advisable to make sure.
